Homebuyers' Informational Sessions
DC Open Doors hosts two monthly homebuyers' informational sessions at DCHFA’s headquarters along with a participating lender and realtor. The FREE sessions take place on the first and third Wednesdays of each month, unless indicated in the schedule below.
During the session the process of buying a home is explained from the perspective of the duties of a lender and the job of a real estate agent; combined with how the DC Open Doors program works within the overall home purchasing context.
The Agency is a short walk from the U Street/Cardozo Metro station (Green Line). Free parking is available in DCHFA’s garage (accessible via V Street NW) and there is also street parking.
Our lending partners along with their real estate partners also host FREE seminars that take place outside of the Agency and feature DC Open Doors.

Statistics prove that homebuyer education contributes to successful homeownership. Homebuyer education teaches prospective homeowners about budgeting, understanding credit, shopping for a home and protecting your investment. DCHFA partners with a variety of HUD-Approved Housing Counseling Agencies throughout Washington, D.C. that offer free homebuyer education.
Our HFA Preferred product (see Highlights chart for details) requires applicants to complete homebuyer education. Attending one of our on or off-site homebuyer informational sessions does not fulfill the homebuyer education requirement for the HFA Preferred product. However, the agencies on this list of HUD-Approved Housing Counselors provide homebuyer education that meets the requirement. Our participating lenders will discuss all qualifications with each applicant. While other loan products do not require homebuyer education, applicants pursuing any of our products may find it useful.
Borrowers may choose the provider of the homebuyer education as long as it meets the standards defined by the National Industry Standards for Homeownership Education.
